Special Educational Needs and Disabilities
As part of the Disability Equality Scheme, Rye Community Primary School welcomes its responsibility to ensure that there are no barriers to access and inclusion. We weave equality for all into our culture including the curriculum and how we communicate with others. At Rye Community Primary School we aim to ensure that all children have opportunities to acquire positive attitudes, values, personal, social and learning skills. These opportunities are each child’s entitlement regardless of their race, gender, class, religion or disability.
Our school is committed to developing the best possible provision for all pupils with Special Educational Needs within an inclusive mainstream setting. As our school is an inclusive school, all children are given equal opportunities to access the curriculum. We follow the Special Needs Code of Practice on the Identification and Assessment of Special Educational Needs (2014) Our school has Dyslexia Friendly Status and we are a Communication Champion School.
During their time here some pupils may need additional support to access the curriculum. The school staff provides an initial assessment and, if needed, an Additional Needs Plan, or Educational Health Care Plan is tailored to meet the needs of the pupil. We also liaise with external support services and agencies as appropriate. Provision is constantly monitored and reviewed. We always welcome and encourage parental involvement.
We will regularly keep you informed of progress and will consult you if and when various types of extra support are being considered, such as the provision of speech therapy, music therapy, nurture group or the Speech Link and Language Link Programme. Usually the teachers will identify when a child needs extra support but sometimes parents may be the first to notice this, or perhaps a child starting school for the first time is already receiving support. If you have any concerns, questions or information relating to your child and the need for additional support, it is vital for the child’s sake that there are good communications between home and school.
Our school has disabled access and facilities at all floor levels (with lift access to the first floor) to accommodate physically disabled children. If your child has special needs it is particularly helpful if you discuss those needs with us before your child starts school. This will enable us to ensure that maximum help is available.

ISEND Education Psychology Helpline
From 18th May 2020, the ISEND Education Psychology service is offering a new parents and carers helpline. The helpline will be available to parents and carers of children with SEND to talk with Education Psychologists (EPs) about various areas of concern, including setting routines, positive behaviour, wellbeing and more.
Parents and carers of children with SEND will need to leave their name and telephone number as well as a very brief description of the kind of support they're looking for and need. Please note that the service is not to be used for complaints or enquiries about EHCP processes
The ISEND phone number to contact is: 01273 481967. An Education Psychologist will call the parent/carer back between 2pm and 4pm on the next Monday, Wednesday or Friday that is available.
